Winterbourne Medieval Barn Wedding Photography – Emma & Andrew
We don’t like the term Hidden Gem to be bandied about with reckless abandon, but I really feel it’s more than justified in today’s blog. Over this summer, we’ve driven countless miles down country lanes. Through farmland in almost every county in the UK, and past more barns than I could ever count. On Emma and Andrew’s wedding day, we approached Winterbourne Medieval Barn, and could easily have looked the the other way for a split second.
From it’s exterior mistaking this absolutely incredible place nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside for just another barn, or missing it entirely. The absolutely unique design and still-standing original construction of this C.14th barn truly is remarkable, and the most beautiful place for Emma and Andrew to be married.
Alongside being a remarkably beautiful place for a modern wedding in the country, it’s also a place of true historic interest. Built in 1342 by Thomas De Bradeston, only three barns of this scale are recorded as having been built, and Winterbourne is the only survivor.
Emma got ready at her parents house a short walk away. Andrew put the finishing touches to the barn. Emma wore a truly incredible antique lace dress, complemented by bright summer flowers, which really set off the elegant, fun atmosphere of the day.
The barn backs onto St Michaels Church, a stones-throw from Emma’s childhood home. It’s where she used to play in the gardens and grounds of the church. This was the perfect and truly personal place to take Emma and Andrew just after their wedding ceremony for some portraits and a little alone time. We wandered down local lanes, climbed into fields, before returning to the barn itself for the wedding breakfast and speeches. A string quartet playing in the courtyard. Later, the whole wedding party wandered over to Emma’s parent’s house for drinks and dancing, a casino tent and live band.
